About the event

A call for participation

We invite all those that believe fashion needs degrowth to come march with us. This will be both a stand against Big Fashion as well as a joyful celebration of alternatives.

Join us in London, UK or Arnhem, Netherlands, or contact us at hello@fashionactnow.org to organise a march elsewhere.

If you can’t make it, join us online via the Global Fashioning Assembly run by the Research Collective for Decoloniality and Fashion (RCDF). If you're joining online, please don't register here but on the GFA website instead. If you’re an organisation, community or activist group, we’d love to collaborate with you to make this happen - email us at hello@fashionactnow.org

The case for degrowth

The fashion industry produces over 100 billion items of clothing and 24.4 billion shoes a year and yet it continues to grow, with its Greenhouse Gas emissions predicted to increase by 50% this decade. Profits are amassed by the cheapening of people, animals and nature. Less than 2% of the workers making our clothes receive a living wage. The industry makes up 20% of industrial water pollution. To bring our clothing system back into planetary boundaries requires a reduction of 75-95%. Greater efficiency won't be enough. The industry needs to downscale and yet it's locked into systems of growth, with 60 million jobs depending on it.

Degrowth means confronting the fetishisation of growth and the global structures that uphold it. It isn’t a desire for a recession but a democratically planned reduction of unnecessary and dirty forms of production to bring us back into balance with the living world and whilst prioritising social justice. Degrowth is about contraction in the Global North to give room for necessary growth and productive sovereignty in the South. It is about a radical redistribution of wealth, with an understanding that the world is abundant. Its false scarcity and inequality that drives deprivation. The global fashion system is built on colonial structures from how it trades to the othering resulting from fashion culture. Degrowth is deep decolonisation, getting to the roots of the coloniality of fashion. Read more here.

More about the march

Fashion Act Now evolved out of the Extinction Rebellion Fashion Action group that protested at London Fashion Week from 2019 - 2021. We are delighted to be hitting the streets once again. This march will take place just after the fashion month.

Details are yet to be decided but expect speeches, creative protest, banners and costumes, manifestations of alternatives to growth-based fashion practices, people’s assemblies and more.

We welcome the themes such as defashioning, commoning, decoloniality, decolonisation, just transition, workers rights, living wage, repair, upcycling, sharing, regenerative farming, farm-to-closet, slow fashion, anti-greenwashing, anti-capitalism, anti-racism, anti-slavery, anti-gender-based-violence and more.

Any donations towards this march will go towards making it happen.

More details will be announced as plans develop. Register to keep up to date with the plans.
