We are facing a climate and ecological emergency in which Fashion is profoundly responsible.
Whilst the industry leads us to believe it can transition to sustainable practices, Fashion Act Now identifies that Fashion itself is incompatible with justice as it is predicated on growth, oppression and planned obsolescence.
Fashion Act Now urges an immediate crisis response to dismantle the dominant globalised Fashion system. It calls that response defashion, the role that Fashion must play in degrowth. Defashion is a transition to post-fashion clothing systems that are regenerative, local, fair, nurturing and sufficient for the needs of communities.

OUR VISION FOR POST-FASHION:
A diversity of independent, local clothing systems, all equally respected, free from the dominant globalised Fashion industry.
Clothing created in the community for the community sharing and nurturing humanity’s abundant knowledge, skills, culture, creativity and resources.
Regenerative production systems that repair the earth and care for peoples and animals living in it.
I DECLARE:
We need defashion now.
The era of Fashion - of a dominant globalised system - must end.
It is neither relevant, nor civilised.
Fashion normalises and depends on the belief that certain people, places and cultures are disposable for the sake of growth. Fashion sacrifices Indigenous cultures, producing more ‘workers’ and ‘consumers’. Fashion dehumanises, splitting the world into those deemed ‘fashionable’ and ‘modern’ and those who are not.
Fashion is novelty not culture. It is not designed for meaning or need.
It is a lie, promising belonging and worth, exploiting our insecurities in order to grow.
Fashion is obliterating bio and cultural diversity.

Governments and the Fashion industry must acknowledge that continued growth of the Fashion industry is destructive and there must be a drastic and immediate planned reduction in energy and resource consumption.
Governments and the Fashion industry must hold citizens’ assemblies to work out how to downscale the Fashion industry and transition to local, regenerative clothing systems,
free from fossil fuels, by 2030.
Governments must hold the Fashion industry to account and ensure the Fashion industry pays up for the loss and damage it has caused.
